Yes you are required to have a 6 month valid passport and a Vietnam visa (or an official visa approval letter) to enter Vietnam. If you arrive Vietnam without an appropriate travel document, you will probably be denied to enter Vietnam.
How to apply for a Vietnam visa?
Vietnam Embassy visa
You can apply for Vietnam visa on the Vietnam Embassy in US website directly (You can also find a list of Vietnam Embassy / Consulate here). It normally requires 2-3 days to process after they receive all your documents. You can send your documents by email or mail or you can visit them in person. The fee is from USD $80 – USD $220 depending on the duration of your stay.
Vietnam Visa on arrival
Alternatively you can apply for Vietnam Visa on arrival. Vietnam Visa on arrival is same as the visa you apply with the Vietnam Embassy. The only difference is that you will receive an official visa approval letter and collect your visa at airport. The official visa letter normally will be issued 2 days after we receive your application online. The fee is from USD $55 depending on the duration of your stay. Advise
We strongly advise not to overstay your visa, Vietnam government has now stopped extending visa for all nationality. If you plan to stay Vietnam longer, you need to apply for a 3 months visa (6 months and 1 year Vietnam visa are also available for US citizens please contact us) in advance.
If you change the purpose of visit during your stay, you must apply for a new Vietnam visa outside Vietnam.
If your passport is lost or stolen, you will need both a replacement passport and a replacement Vietnamese visa in order to arrive AND depart Vietnam. The whole process may take up to 5 working days.
